Lao PDR establishes diplomatic relations with the Congo

LAO PDR (Vientiane Times) - The Lao PDR and the Republic of the Congo have entered into diplomatic relations, with the two countries signing a joint statement on the establishment of relations in Beijing, China, on August 29.

Lao Ambassador to China Ms Vandy Boudthasavong represented the Lao government, and the Ambassador of the Republic of the Congo (the Congo) to China Mr Daniel Owassa represented the government of the African country in signing the agreement.

Ms Vandy praised the move and said she highly valued the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, which she said would be fundamental and a solid milestone for future cooperation, and bring real benefits to both nations.

Also speaking at the signing ceremony, Ambassador Owassa applauded the signing of the diplomatic document, which he said was a milestone in relations between the Republic of the Congo and the Lao PDR. The two sides briefed each other on socioeconomic developments and the development potential of their countries, expressing confidence that the friendship and cooperation between them would be strengthened.

The Republic of the Congo is located on the western coast of Central Africa. The country has a total area of 342,000 square kilometres and a population of 5.1 million people (2016 estimate). After establishing diplomatic relations with the Congo, Laos now has diplomatic ties with 142 countries. Some 24 countries have embassies in Vientiane and four have established consulates.
